How to Upgrade Your Home as a Working Mom

Hello fellow working moms! My name is jess and I’m here to help you upgrade your home so that it reflects the best version of yourself. It can be daunting to contemplate  upgrades to your home, but I promise these upgrades will make you feel accomplished, confident and happy in your space. Let's get started.

Bathtub or Shower?

If you love a bathtub but tight on space? Try a shower bath combo with a modern, free standing tub to utilize even your lower walls! The National Home Builders Association found that over 50% of buyers prefer a bath and shower in the primary suite.

Who doesn't love the feeling of a spa in their home? ! Either way, home value goes up regardless of where it's added- you just need one (think family buyers).

Kitchen upgrades

Kitchens are the heart of the home. They're where you spend most of your time and money, so it's important to make sure that they reflect who you are. Kitchens also tend to be focal points for entertaining, so they should feel like an extension of your personality in every way possible--from the decor down to how much counter space there is.

Details like pot fillers tell a story and create positive attention. Also, an added step of convenience is a big win for working parents trying to balance it all.

Don't forget to look up

Details in the ceiling can add drama and warmth. It also gives a luxury feel if done correctly. Give your guests, or buyers something they can't stop thinking about. Examples of this include: coffered ceilings, tray ceilings, tin ceilings, wood cladding, or even beams!

Outdoor Spaces Matter Too

Highlight the view. Views scream luxury! Have a view of the lake or want to bring nature in? Don’t underestimate the power of windows, especially in little nooks where you can get a lot of bang for your buck. A pool adds a lot of re-sale value, especially if it can blend in with the natural landscape. These organic, free form pools can really make a home feel like a sanctuary and make adding organic landscape much easier. Better yet? Waterfall features look like they truly belong.

Windows are a great way to add value to your home (think double or triple pane though), especially if you have views of the lake or want to bring nature into your house. Just remember that black out curtains or sun shades are recommended for temperature control inside!

If you're looking for more options than just window treatments, consider adding shutters or blinds (or both!). Shutters can be painted any color that matches your decorating scheme and they will automatically add texture and depth without taking up too much room on the wall.

Updating your home is good for the mind and soul

Have natural elements like exposed stone? Highlight the texture and create a European feel/style that will draw people into your unique heart of the home. Buyers are drawn to natural elements and subtle colors. It helps them see themselves in the home... but paint is still just paint! Think of future buyers for bigger purchase items like counter tops and flooring.... not the paint.

In the old days, home renovations were all about making your house look good on the outside. Today, it's more important to focus on what's going on inside your walls. The best part? You don't need a ton of money or even professional help! Just one thing: patience!

Be patient with yourself--it takes time to get everything done right! Don't rush through any steps just because they seem boring (like picking out paint colors). Take your time so that everything comes out looking great when it's finished being painted or stained/ sealed/ waxed/ polished/ etc.

When clients ask me about home improvements, one question always comes up: "Will this hurt my resale value?" It's a valid concern, but here's what I've learned after years in real estate - your home should bring you joy AND maintain its value. These two goals don't have to be at odds.
