Where are New Yorkers Moving? Upstate New York

New York City can be claustrophobic and overwhelming. If you are wanting to slow down, take a look at some nearby suburbs where you'll still get all the benefits of living close to New York, but with less hustle and bustle. Many New York City residents are moving into the New York suburbs annually.

Living in a suburb of New York City is a great way to get out of the city without feeling too far away from it all. You get the perks of living in the Big Apple: access to world-class restaurants, museums, culture, nightlife and entertainment—but at a slower pace that's easier on your mind and body. The best part about living in these suburbs is that most of them have commuter trains that run directly into Manhattan—so you don't even have to worry about driving!

Here are some of our favorite areas for those looking to move from NYC.

Many New York City residents are wanting to escape the day-to-day rate race of the city. But they still love the city. So, where are New Yorkers Moving? Upstate New York.  Cities like Pound Ridge, Katonah, and North Westchester.  Once you drive passed White Plains, New York is a  totally different landscape. There are more trees and less roads.

North Westchester is a rural gem

Many people have a desire to live in New York City, but are frustrated by its crowds and limited opportunities for outdoor recreation. The answer? North Westchester! While it may seem far  from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan, I assure you that living here will give you access to all the best parts of New York without having to deal with any of the inconveniences.

"North Westchester has something for everyone, the City says on their website. "We have world-class museums, art galleries and restaurants; beautiful parks like Waterside Plaza Park and Lake Minnewaska State Park offer hiking trails through forested areas where deer graze on grass under towering trees; Rivertowns Community College offers classes on everything from beekeeping to knitting in their state-of-the-art facilities; we even have several community gardens where residents can grow their own vegetables! If nature isn't your thing there's always some culture in our local theaters or music venues or maybe even some history at Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site? In short: Whatever your interests may be there's something for everyone here in North Westchester!"

Northern Westchester is a rural gem, with miles of open spaces. This provides residents trails for hiking, biking and exploring,  lakes, streams and rivers. There are farms that host activities for the whole family, great restaurant options, and boutique shopping. This is a great place to live if you want for an active outdoor lifestyle, while being close to New York City.

Why Pound Ridge, New York?

Pound Ridge, New York is a town in the west-central part of Westchester County, 550 miles north of New York City. Or as I call it, a one hour train ride. The town itself is located on the southern bank of the Hudson River Valley.  Pound Ridge has a rich history that can be found throughout its architecture—you’ll see old colonial homes alongside new developments.

Pound Ridge has an active community. The closest Metro-North Railway stations are in New Canaan, Connecticut, served by the New Haven Line, and Katonah, Bedford Hills, and Mount Kisco, New York, served by the Harlem Line.

You will be surprised by some of the unique things to do and places you can explore at this hidden destination. I would tell anyone to move to Pound Ridge.

Katonah is inclusive to all

The New York Times wrote about Katonah as a place where people felt at home. They said, "Katonah’s less-than-a-mile-long commercial corridor runs north-south, paralleling the Metro-North Railroad tracks. It contains two small shopping centers as well as Katonah Avenue, with its restaurants, businesses and eclectic boutiques, many occupying turn-of-the-20th-century Victorians."

Katonah is a walkable place, where neighbors know each other, and people value community.  The Katonah Village Library has a calendar of events for the community to enjoy. The Katonah Museum of Art is an innovative art museum that features a diverse range of exhibitions and programs, engages local communities with topics of international scope and global impact, and serves as a resource for the community. They are committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming Museum experience for all members of the community. This is a trend in Katonah! The Katonah Reading Room is another local business that prides itself on inclusion. This is another place I love to visit with my family.

Katonah has a lot of art influence, and a lot of artists. We have 3 art galleries in Katonah. One of my personal favorite places to  have Caramoor in Katonah.

"Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts is a destination for exceptional music, captivating programs, spectacular gardens and grounds, and wonderful moments with friends and family. It enriches the lives of its audiences through innovative and diverse musical performances of the highest quality. Its mission also includes mentoring young professional musicians and providing educational programs for young children centered around music.", They say on their website.

If you are thinking or talking about moving to the city, consider a quick 1 hour train ride to check out these towns. Go to Sunday brunch or grab coffee from a local shop.
